Headaches - A Pain In The Neck?

Headaches are a symptom that you are probably familiar with, but did you know that headaches vary person to person and that the type of headache you have can lead doctors to the cause of the headache?

There are many types and locations of headaches.  There is a headache that you feel in the front of the head which is often stress or sinus related.  Headaches felt in the temples can be related to eye strain, tension or even TMJ problems.  Migraines and cluster headache symptoms are often located on one side of the head or around an eye and can be extremely intense.  Although Chiropractors treat all of these type of headaches the form of headache we see most is the headache felt at the back of the head and the top of the head.  Most often this area of headache come from a problem associated with the neck.

The following is an excerpt from the American Chiropractic Association web site concerning headaches:

"A report released in 2001 by researchers at the Duke University Evidence-Based Practice Center in Durham, NC, found that spinal manipulation resulted in almost immediate improvement for those headaches that originate in the neck, and had significantly fewer side effects and longer-lasting relief of tension-type headache than a commonly prescribed medication.
Also, a 1995 study in the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics found that spinal manipulative therapy is an effective treatment for tension headaches and that those who ceased chiropractic treatment after four weeks experienced a sustained therapeutic benefit in contrast with those patients who received a commonly prescribed medication."
